“Don’t…”
Shuya’s eyes were cold as he simply cut off Kayoko before she could even start speaking. The two of them had been quietly walking through the crowded halls of Hircine High after Kayoko had started about Shuya’s involvements with Loire’s goal. Shuya had mostly ignored her and when she had tried to start discussing it again, he had made a quick ending to it. Kayoko kept up with Shuya’s fast pace but her eyes showed stubbornness, she wasn’t going to give up so easy. Though she kept her tongue Shuya could feel her eyes pierce through his head, reading his mind. She had always known trying to talk sense into his head was useless, but still she never have up.
Suddenly, Kayoko grabbed Shuya with a force Shuya had never expected from her and he was soon turned towards her, his eyes meeting hers as they faced one another.
”Alright, this is bullshit Katsumoto! When are you going to stop this foolishness of yours and take a moment to think this through carefully!” Kayoko’s voice wasn’t loud but every word was emphasized strongly and Shuya knew he couldn’t walk away from it any longer but still, he didn’t feel this was the place to discuss this.
“Since when do you call me by my last name? And still, Kayoko, not here, not now… You know I’ve made up my mind…”
Shuya wanted to turn around again but Kayoko hadn’t let go yet. Of course, he could always push and drag her all the way through the hall, but in all honesty, Kayoko was one of the few people who could actually stop Shuya and question him without having to worry about any hostility… well, hostile deeds, not words…
”Then why can’t you let me any closer? Why do you want to keep me out of this, Shuya? Can it be that you truly care about someone for once?” Her eyes weren’t as stubborn as before, they had now turned calm and questioning, though Shuya could sense a small tad of pleading in them too. Shuya however slowly rose his eyebrow before calmly responding to her.
“Perhaps… but that doesn’t change a goddamn thing… I tell you now, Kayoko… don’t get yourself too involved with this… with me… It can only bring you harm and I cannot protect you…”
”Yes you can!” The roaming noise coming from the other students seemed to slowly fade out as Kayoko had suddenly started shouting at Shuya. Shuya himself was also confused by the sudden outburst of Kayoko. What was she on about?
“Kayoko…”
”No! Enough! Are you simply pretending to be blind or do you truly not see!? I cannot protect you, but I don’t want to lose you either! I don’t want you to get hurt Shuya! Shuya… I love you goddamnit!”
Shuya’s eyes still showed slight confusion but he quickly recovered as his blank stare reappeared on his face again. His voice now stern, his words spoken slowly.
“Kayoko… Love someone else…”
Small tears started to drip down Kayoko’s cheeks and eventually fall down onto the floor. Her hand seemed to drop away from Shuya’s arm for an eternity, but she suddenly snapped out of it and screamed at Shuya once more before she ran away, as far away from Shuya as she could:
”You truly still are a senseless bastard! And here I thought you actually changed!”
Shuya’s eyes followed her run out the hallway but he didn’t make any motion of following her. He knew he had hurt her, but it was the only way he could protect her… if he could protect her at all that is. She still didn’t understand… he couldn’t back out now… Turning towards the direction he had been walking in, he now continued his walk. Most students were staring at him but the silence didn’t last for long. Shuya clenched his fists as people started to mumble again, but some eyes were still staring at him.
“What the fuck are you looking at!” he screamed at a fellow senior who was openly staring at him, not trying to hide it or anything. The guy however hadn’t expected Shuya’s sudden burst of anger and stumbled back against the lockers. Shuya’s eyes turned away from him again as he continued his walk.
‘Bunch of losers…’
