Name: Galen Kao

Nationality: American
Ethnicity: Taiwanese
Height: 5’ 8”
Weight: 125 LBS
Attending School: Hircine High
Let me guess. In an age where corporal punishment dominates the school system, you’d expect this guy to be rather tough looking, right? Right? Right?
If anything, pale little Galen looks like a nerd. A geek. And most of all, a total wimp. He’s a lanky looking young man. His muscles are long and lean, meaning that he won’t ever get bulky, though his muscles are toned to a decent degree, in order to give him a decent amount of strength behind that bony appearance. The young man’s legs and arms are a tad longer than average. His black hair is usually never combed, and it always looks like he just rolled out of bed. And underneath those messy bangs of his is a pair of calm, dark brown eyes which are shielded by a pair of glasses. Considering the fact that he has borderline vision though, the glasses are more of a physical decoration than a necessity.
Galen’s a simple guy, and a simple guy wears simple clothing. His favorite, and usual outfit, consists of a thin navy blue jacket, unzipped of course, a white T-shirt, and a pair of baggy, black jeans. He looks like any other face in the crowd, and blends in well. He doesn’t like to stand out all that much preferring the shadowy background to the bright spotlight.
Seeing how he doesn’t like the spotlight, it’s only expected that he’s of the quiet type. A lot of people tend to think Galen is one of those anti-social emo kids, seeing how he rarely talks around the vast majority of people, and he mostly keeps to himself, hiding himself in the back of the classroom with a pencil and sketch pad. He’s not really emo however. He’s just shy and socially awkward. You should see him when he’s around his friends. He’s talkative, loud, and can be extremely goofy and light hearted. Once he makes a friend, he opens up relatively quickly, and tries to keep things exciting.
Galen’s a Christian. Yup, he’s a man of faith, but he doesn’t go preaching about it, and he doesn’t really tell anyone. Heck, most people who meet him don’t even know it. Galen’s a man of action, and he lets his actions speak for him. He’s very accepting of other’s beliefs, and only gets defensive of his own beliefs and morals if they are unfairly bashed and spat on. So pretty much, as long as you have the ability to show respect to others, he probably won’t have any problems with you. He doesn’t like to judge others, seeing how no one is perfect.
And speaking of imperfections, Galen has plenty himself. One is that he tends to bottle up his emotions. It’s not really healthy, but that’s just how he rolls. Second, though he may seen calm most of the time, when he gets angry, he gets really angry, going as far as smashing furniture, or destroying parts of his environment. He’s not proud of his violent out bursts, and it always leaves him feeling worse, but some how, these out bursts just tend to happen every now and again. Sadly. He also doesn’t see himself in all that great of a light. He tends to hold others in high regard, but it’s been said that he’s a harsh critic of himself, his work, his actions, and his flaws.

Habits/Quirks:[/u]
Galen’s fighting style is based around the martial art Taekwondo. However, contrary to the kick based combat that Taekwondo teaches, Galen is most proficient with his hands. His hands are fast, and he’s mixed his Taekwondo knowledge with techniques from Brazilian jiu-jitsu and Muay Thai. His style is a mix of various techniques built up from spars, and chats with old buddies who were also into martial arts. He focuses on counter fighting, seeing how he doesn’t like starting fights, and only fights when struck at first. He’s a calculating fighter, searching for openings and striking only where he sees the greatest chance for a hit. And he attacks using minimal movement, preferring efficiency over beauty, making the most of his speed.
Though he rarely uses it, he’s fairly proficient in knife combat.
Strengths:[/u]
When it comes to combat, Galen’s greatest strengths are his speed and agility. He’s fast on the offensive, and quick on the defensive. And while his physical strength may only be around average, his speed helps him generate a lot of power. And unlike most speed based fighters, Galen has a decent amount of stamina, and can run around for quite a bit of time, and takes caution to make sure he doesn’t waste his energy. Galen’s legs are well trained, providing him with good balance and powerful counter kicks. His fast hands provide for good offense and defense as well.
But his hands aren’t only good for combat. Galen prefers to use his hands to create. He loves drawing, and has been doing so since he was three, developing his love of drawing from a young age. But his strength doesn’t really come from his drawing ability, per say. It comes from his desire to draw. His ambition, and his drive. His drive fuels almost every aspect of his life, and he doesn’t like to let anything stand in his way. If there’s one thing that can match his love of drawing, it’s the desire to constantly better himself and reach new heights, being the best he can be.
Weaknesses:[/u]
Galen can generate a lot of power, but that doesn’t really mean he’s extremely strong. Yes, the young man does have enough of a muscular build to provide him with good explosive strength and keep him fairly sturdy, but in terms of brute strength, Galen only ranks around average. The same goes for his endurance. His stamina is great, but seeing how he prefers to avoid fights, he isn’t all that used to being wailed on. His arms are sturdy from constantly blocking, but his torso, sadly, isn’t used to that kind of powerful impact.
Seeing how he likes to seclude himself in his own little worlds, Galen is a bit awkward socially. He doesn’t feel comfortable in crowds, and tends to screw up when handing tense social situations. He’s also a bit overly trusting of people, something that can be taken advantage of. If you want to be cruel.
All kids enjoy playing outside as little tots. Galen was no different. But despite the enjoyment he got from playing hide and seek in the bushes and tagging other children who began to whine and cry afterwards, the Taiwanese boy always had a preference for sitting down with a pencil and paper and doodling. He developed this love for drawing, manga in particular, after catching Akira on the television at the age of three. Sadly, his mother shut off the TV instantly when she saw what her precious gift from above was watching, and laughing, at. All things considered though, something that initially appeared as inappropriate turned out to good for the boy. It gave him a healthy hobby, and provided him with a dream that he would carry to even this day. To be a mangaka.
But enough about all of that. Frankly the boy lived a fairly regular childhood. There were the laughs, the spills of orange juice, and fighting for the slide during recess… Galen’s childhood was nothing out of the ordinary, and I doubt you’d want to hear a rant on things you’ve probably experienced a hundred times over. So let’s jump forward a few years, shall we? Now… Where do things get mildly exciting at the least?
Ah! I know! How about the accident?
Now, about this accident. This is as much of a lesson as much as it is a story, so listen up and take notes. You all probably know that students do have free periods in the upper grades, and Galen was one of those lucky ducks who had his free period with a few good buddies of his. And like a bunch of teens, Galen decided to grab lunch at a nearby Wendy’s or Burger King instead of paying a truck load of money for a grilled chicken sandwich with hold on the bun.
One problem.
The designated driver was a total moron. If there had been someone else who was able to drive, that person would’ve been picked. But seeing how he was the only option, and this guy hadn’t gotten them killed (yet), they put their trust in him. And that was mistake number one.
The other mistake was the driver’s fault. I mean, c’mon… Who the hell swerves on the freeway just to freak out his friends? And who the hell tries to drive with his teeth, for Christ’s sake!? That is just plain stupid. But at least that was the last mistake the group made during that drive. Because they ended up crashing, so they couldn’t make any more mistakes. Which… In retrospect, isn’t that good thing after all.
At least they survived though.
Unfortunately, flesh and bone isn’t as sturdy as metal, and… Well, some of the kids ended up being hospitalized. Galen was one of them. They even needed to operate on him, due to some complication with his heart which resulted from the accident. Galen was confined to the hospital for a few months after his operation. Still, it wasn’t that boring. Between drawing, and sending pictures of his middle finger to his idiot driver buddy, Galen kept himself entertained, if just barely.
Galen’s parents pulled Galen out of his old high school once he got out unfortunately, despite protests from the Taiwanese teen. See, Galen had paranoid parents. And after that huge accident, and almost losing their only son to what they called a bunch of “joyriding nitwits” (though there was really only one nitwit), they sent Galen to a different school, hoping to give him a fresh start, and keep him out of reach of the “joyriding nitwits” as much as they could. They even went as far to send him so far away that Galen had to take a one hour flight to San Francisco.
And here Galen is now, a teen who has a knack for not handling “fresh starts” all too well, in an unfamiliar city, away from his parents, and living on his own.
Life sure is a doozy, ain’t it?
Heh.
