Name: Marita Christen
Nationality: United States
Ethnicity: Swiss, with a little Finnish from her mother's side
Attending School: Pending moderator
Age: 17
Weight: 125 lbs
Height: 5' 5"
Body Appearance: Trim and well-exercised, Marita cultivates an athletic physique that is light on muscle mass and heavy on muscle tone. From her exercise routine, she seems to practice more aerobic exercises rather than anaerobic power exercises. Her skin is fair and relatively free of teenage blemishes. Her chest is about average, but her legs are long enough to attractive attention.
Cosmetic Appearance: Marita typically dresses in skirts or shorts and tanks and knee-high zippered black boots to emphasize her legs. She has rectangular-framed glasses that she off-and-on debates replacing for contacts, ultimately not going for it due to financial reasons. Her favorite colors to incorporate are red bottoms and white tops. She has a tendency to dress in the traditional colors for particular holidays (St. Patrick's Day, Christmas, Halloween, etc.). While by no means a fashion phillistine, Marita's budget is limited and thus, does not buy name-brand merchandise frequently. The nicer clothing she has tends to be gifts.
Eye Color: Hazel
Hair: A natural brunette, Marita keeps her hair no longer than chin-length, parted in the middle, and takes good care of it. It is frequently mashed up under a swim cap, so it sometimes gets tangles.
Habits: An unfortunate tendency to drum her fingers when annoyed (the faster it goes, the more irritated she is, an excellent gauge of her frustration with you!). She likes to spin a pencil around in her fingers when thinking.
Personality: Marita is a woman conflicted with herself. On the one side, she craves the social approval of her peers and attempts to be more like them. Flirting, gossiping, and the like. On the other side, she really wants to be a doctor and tries to study hard and get good grades in class so she can land a good scholarship (she definitely cannot afford university on her own), which tends to manifest itself in a set of nerdy stereotypes like preferring reading to shopping and she tends to feel painfully out-of-place at parties. All in all, she's not sure what she wants and often doesn't know how to act in certain situations which leads to sometimes a period of awkward analysis followed by a response with varying degrees of relevance. She doesn't like being cruel or catty, but is often obsessed with the idea of not appearing as a doormat in the tough school environment and would compromise an image of integrity to avoid one of being a goody-two-shoes.
Hobbies: Swimming is her one big time hobby. She's loved it since she was a kid and takes to water like a fish. Problems melt away in the water. In her spare time, she likes watching medical dramas on television.
Extracurricular: Swim team, gymnastics team
History: Marita Christen is a 4th generation Swiss Miss. Her parents have still given her a classic Swiss name (and added an 'a' to sound more American-feminine), and raised her with love and care. A middle-class family, her father was a frumpy middle manager who spent his entire life making someone else rich (and frequently complained at home about it) while her mother kept the home. Unfortunately, during a 'right-sizing,' her father lost his job when Marita was 6 and to make ends meet, both of her parents took low-paying jobs while she went to school. Things went from bad to worse, as her father tried to nurse the blow to his ego with alcohol, and gained a dependence fairly rapidly thanks to his already regular drinking and family history of alcoholism. Her mother, straining under it, filed for divorce, and the lengthy court proceedings, although desperately hidden from Marita, easily found their way through. The lawyer dance drained her father immensely, and he soon was an admitted alcoholic, and deemed unfit to care for Marita. Her mother won sole custody.
With her mother having little skills marketable in the business world, Marita's mother was forced to make ends meet and worked two jobs. To take over for watching the children, her mother, Marita's grandmother, would watch her when she came home from school and was responsible for getting her up in the morning. Marita loved Mom-Mom, as she was named, and was raised that making people happy was the best thing in the world. Mom worked to make Marita happy, so Marita had to be good and do her chores. Marita did this for a number of years, becoming a wallflower and doormat all in the sake of making other people happy. The fact that people knew and took advantage of this started to shape Marita's mind, and secretly she started to resent people taking advantage of her generosity. When Marita was 11, Mom-Mom soon had her age catch up to her, and so Marita was left largely to fend for herself.
At age 12, tragedy struck. Marita's mother, driving home late from work, was struck by a felon in a stolen car in a driver's side impact collision, and was pronounced dead on the scene. Her father, tried to pick himself up and sued civilly, but the man had next-to-no possessions and so the damages awarded meant little. When her father proved that he could be a sound father, Marita moved and lived with him, taking much of her only possessions and leaving her friends behind.
Her father taught her that being overly nice got you exploited, and so taught her that she needed to utilize her own talents to get ahead. For Marita, it was her memory and her ability to solve problems. Unfortunately, this left her socially unsure how to proceed, and her demeanor was perceived as snobby and manipulative. She had few friends, and started to fall back into old habits.
If fate were thought to be fair, then somewhere someone lived the golden life, because her father's alcohol abuse resulted in malignant liver cancer which spread rapidly through his body when Marita was 14. Unable to afford better treatment, he was subjected to a barrage of chemotherapy which did little to spread the onslaught of the disease. It got into his lymphic system and he spent a painful wasting year in the hospital.
When he was released for the final time, he spent the day with Marita. He couldn't ride any of the rides, but she got to go to the amusement park, and then sit and watch television and fall asleep in her father's arms. In a stroke of unbelievable fortune, her father had bought a lottery ticket as a joke, and when it delivered a prize of half a million dollars, he woke her up to share in his good fortune. Soon after, he was admitted back into the hospital, and died with dignity after an arrangement with his doctors.
Marita, now 15, could live with her mother's brother across the country, but she asked him if he would sponsor an apartment using the money she had inherited from the unfortunate deaths of both sides of her family, placed into a trust by lawyers until her 18th birthday as befitted the legal scenario. She now lives alone in a one-bedroom apartment that she takes good care of. There is currently an open offer extended from her legal guardian to come and live with her, but she doesn't want to move again.
With the influx of the Varron Academy students, school has gotten a lot rougher and a lot more tenuous. She's hoping that with the influx of new students, perhaps she can find a social clique that she can truly fit into, but in the end, she doesn't know what she really wants.
Fighting Style: Jeet Kune Do. Marita is a adaptive, soft-fighter, who practices redirection and counterhitting, including throws, as opposed to a traditional 'hard' style. Her fighting style relies on her mind as much as her body, predicting, redirecting, and following through with the strike. Given her long legs, she prefers kicking to punching when striking, but her primary focus is redirection then improvisation.
Fighting Style Strengths:
Effortless - One of Jeet Kune Do's core philosophies, Marita uses much less force than her opponent, only attacking weakpoints after she exposes them, and thus, uses less stamina than her opponents
Formless - Adaptivity is the key to Jeet Kune Do, and as such, Marita carefully watches her opponent's stance to adapt their weaknesses into her routine.
Agility - Years of swimming have given Marita a fluidity of movement that has responded well to her training. With her ability to adapt comes the corrolary of moving quickly to effectively adapt.
Weaknesses:
Strength - Marita's exercise routine generally involves resistance exercises where the greatest limitation is her body weight. As such, she is not physically strong, and as such, her blows tend to do little damage
Range - Marita is short, and especially her punches suffer from being very close ranged. Marita finds it difficult to land blows against opponents skilled at keeping their distance and utilizing their longer limbs.
Lack of Focus - Her adaptability is also her weakness. If she is confused by a fighting style, or someone can counter her attempt to turn their weakpoints upon themselves, Marita is often stuck using her inferior strength and striking ability against a much more skilled opponent.
