About Bane
Bane is light-hearted and friendly, but with a tendency to be a little touchy if his friends are insulted. He was once an extremely shy and introverted boy, but has recently been making an effort to be outgoing. He loves people and does his best to look for good qualities, but he has little patience for stupidity.
He loves to philosophize with people, but loves to spar with them even more. Noting intrigues him more than learning about someone through their movements and fighting style. It's easy for him to be intimidated by other people's personalities, but intimidating him with your fighting style is another matter.
He may be less awkward that he was in middle school, but girls still scare the bajeezes out of him sometimes.
He is little concerned with academics other than to learn about life. Classes such as math and science, although he can grasp them fairly easily and realizes that they are somewhat necessary for later in life, no longer hold his attention long. As a result, he is not as quick-witted as he once was, although he can be a fierce competitor in a debate if his heart is in it.
Beliefs: Harmony between mind and body is the first step toward true happiness.
There is a God, and He/She loves everyone. Yes, He/She made life difficult, but it's also beautiful if you make an effort to live it. Bane isn't going to ram that down your throat, but he would love to hear about why you believe what you believe, and would love for you to hear what he has to say as well.
Your body is a temple, and you cant be happy if you don't take care of it and train it. The reason people are unhappy (the majority of the time) is because they let their emotions and their body become stagnant and don't let themselves move on or grow. People are dynamic beings, and if they don't learn, move, or think on a fairly regular basis, then they're going to become miserable.
Physical Information
Build: Not extremely muscular, but defined in his shape.
Head: Light brown hair that falls down to the base of his neck in the back, and just above his eyebrows in front. His eyes are blue with almost a gray smoky quality to them, and they stand out well against his lightly tanned skin. Finally, a tuft of scruff adorns his chin. He's no "pretty-boy," but he's content with the way he looks.
Torso: His chest is sculpted, although it isn't that of a body builder. His abdomen and lower back, however, are well toned from his training in capoeira. A few small scars under his left pectoral muscle remain from his training with handling knives.
Arms: His shoulders are well toned. The rest of his arms, like his chest, aren't godlike, but aren't scrawny by any means. The inside of his left arm shows the remains of his worst knife injury.
Legs: The main weapon in his training, these are just as well defined as his abdomen. His training demands flexibility, and he has done a good job of remaining so.
Feet: Since he thinks little of wearing shoes, the pads of his feet have become rough and thick.
Typical Clothing
Head Gear: Thin, frameless glasses
Shirts: The shirts he wears often have the names of the bands he listens to, but whenever possible, he wears a light blue button up shirt, and leaves it open in front.
Pants: He usually is content with simple, loose-fit jeans, but will sometimes wear his plain white capoeira pants just for comfort's sake.
Shoes: Unless they're required or it's absolutely freezing outside, he usually goes barefoot, However, he's been known to wear simple flip-flops or white high-top Converses if the need arises.
Misc: He usually wears very simple jewelry (if any). His favorites are a necklace decorated with several small, bleached cowrie shells, and a sterling silver ring with Celtic designs. When he's feeling particularly nerdy, he'll wear a ring that consists of a simple gold band (to pay homage to Tolkien).
Fighting Style, Etc.
Bane is a hodge-podge of martial arts forms. Most forms that he has taken he was only trained in briefly before finding different styles to fill in the gaps in his defense or offense. He incorporates elements from many arts, but most of his style comes from 3 or 4 styles, and the following are listed in the order in which he has specialized
Fighting Style: Aikido
Years Practiced: 2
Description of style: Possibly the most non-violent of all forms, Aikido has absolutely no striking whatsoever. The form consists of blending the attacks of one's opponents and using the force against them. most of the style consists of three or 4 basic step patterns, some joint locking, a solid stance, and arm positionings that utilize all of the muscles in order to maximize effectiveness.
Fighting Style: Boxing
Years Practiced: 1
Description of style: To make up for his lack of offensive training, Bane incorporated boxing's quick, simple, and effective jabs and hooks into his style.
Fighting Style: Mixed Grappling
Years Practiced: 1 and a half
Description of style: While he was taking boxing, he realized that since most of aikido's grappling was based on the firmness of his stance, that he was leaving himself very vulnerable if a fight went to the floor. He spent a while going back and forth between wrestling, jiu-jutsu, and wing-tsun in order to learn to hold his own on the ground. His favorite techniques include wrist locks, arm bars, and choke holds, but he isn't above using toe-holds and leg bars when the need arises.
Fighting Style: Capoeira
Years Practiced: 4
Description of style: Having been originally created by African slaves in Brazil, Capoeira is by far Bane's favorite form. Its practical use is somewhat limited, but its range and speed are legendary. The basic step is a triangle where each foot takes a step back before going back to its original spot in front allowing the other to step back and do the same. From the front, it appears as if the capoerista is simply shifting rhythmically from side to side almost as if he/she were dancing. After all, the form was originally disguised as a dance so masters wouldn't catching on to the fact that their slaves were learning to defend themselves. Since the slaves' hands were bound, Capoeira uses the legs as its primary weapon, sending them in high spinning kicks or low leg sweeps. When done properly, the form almost looks like break dancing, and actually shares several moves with it. (if you absolutely need a better visual, just try youtube).
Strengths
Capoeira requires extreme core strength, flexibility, speed, and endurance, as well as constant and fluid movement, each of which being invaluable to Bane and his style. It also allows him to be more effective at a distance, since te form capitalizes on effective utilization of leg work. Also, he has worked hard to make a very balanced and effective repertoire for himself.
Weaknesses
Because the main form he uses is so acrobatic, it has the potential to wear him out more quickly. For the same reason, he has a greater risk of traking bad falls when his opponents attack. Also, his mixture of martial arts comes st the price of not having mastered any particular one. Finally, when it comes to brute strength or sheer size, Bane is a bit of a minumus. If it comes down to an arm-wrestling match, he'd probably be hosed.
History Information
History:
Having been raised in Kansas for the majority of his life, San Diego was a bit of a culture shock for him. In his youth, he was used to wide spaces and fairly unpopulated living conditions. Now he can barely seen the sky because of the surrounding buildings, and he was often overwhelmed by the sheer number of people. This led him to become very introverted, and didn't interact with many people at all during junior high. Because of the new and rough conditions he did not give up his martial arts training, but he didn't like the people he was learning with.
During the summer before his first year of high school, though, he saw a boy a year or so younger than him practicing capoeira on the beach. He was intrigued by the rhythmic and beautiful form, and decided to look into it. The students at the capoeira school were extremely friendly, and had a spark of humanity that Bane hadn't seen since his life back in Kansas, and he not only joined the class, but became good friends with his fellow students and allowed himself to start living life again. His favorite pastime was to practice with his friends on the beach, which led to a love of water that he carries with him still.
At the end of the summer, his family moved to San Fransisco, and Bane had to say goodbye to his new friends. It was a difficult goodbye, but he knew better than to let himself become depressed because of it. The rigorous training he had begun had taught him that sitting still, whether spiritually or physically, made things worse.
