A soft sigh escaped the young adult’s mouth as he entered the small Japanese club he had discovered only recently. His depression hadn’t really left yet and still he was lingering in this place. He knew he would leave this place soon if nothing changed and as things were, it would appear things wouldn’t change. He had planned on going to leave without letting anyone know but his new found friend at the club had advised him not to leave without saying goodbye to those Kokaku cared about. Kokaku had written a new song and wanted to sing it at the place he had grown accustomed to. He knew a lot of the people that frequented it, most of them were Japanese or Americans interested in Japan. But most of the Japanese people spoke perfect English. Therefore Kokaku had written the song in English, so everyone could understand it. In it, he had put his feelings right now and a hint on what he might be doing. He hadn’t invited any of his friends to come see it, but he suspected Ando, the manager of the club, might’ve asked some of them to come. It didn’t really matter anyway.
Ando walked over to him as he entered and greeted him with a smile on his face. Kokaku didn’t really answer the smile but gave him a friendly nod. Ando placed his hand on Kokaku’s shoulder as he walked him over to the bar and offered him a Japanese beer. The taste of the homebrewed beer felt good and Kokaku desired to go back to Japan even more. He finally showed signs of a smile before he finally spoke to Ando.
*”So, I take it you just told the regulars I’d be messing up their days if they decided to come here right now?”*
*”Don’t be silly… you know you have a good voice and my band doesn’t miss any notes… so it’ll be fun. As you can see it’s quite filled, you ready to do this?”*
*”Heh… I’d like to say I was born ready but I don’t have the right ego for that… let’s just get this done with.”*
Kokaku left the bar and walked up the stage, taking position behind the microphone. The rest of the band was already there and Kokaku gave them all a small gesture with his head as he waited for the guitarist to start playing the first notes, followed by the piano and the soft playing of the drums. The background voice of his new found friend Ando suddenly echoed through the club and the crowd, mostly familiars to Kokaku, started to applause and waited for Kokaku to start singing.
I built bridges from rocks,
But without water…
I traveled all over the world,
Much farther than I could.
Until I started over,
And conquered my mountains.
Not brave and neither scared,
I noticed how you came to me!
And the floor softly kisses your feet,
She is with you, every step.
And every day she’ll be trusted,
She will carry you!
‘Cause the floor softly kisses your feet,
She is here and in your dreams.
She’ll always be if you want it to be,
A way to come home…
You don’t have to enter the depths,
To understand the world.
But climb as high as you can,
And oversee it, there’s so much to look at.
I’ll give you what I can,
Be brave, be scared,
And if the door closes behind you,
I’ll still feel your mouth on my cheek!
And the floor softly kisses your feet,
She is with you, every step.
And every day she’ll be trusted,
She will carry you!
‘Cause the floor softly kisses your feet,
She is here and in your dreams.
She’ll always be if you want it to be,
A way to come home…
Kokaku’s eyes were numb as he song the final word and took a small step back. The crowd applauded and the band looked content with the results, and so did Kokaku. He bowed to the crowd before walking down the stage again where he met up with Ando who had been singing the background voice.
*”It was a good song, Musha. I didn’t want to give the background lyrics to someone else, I hope you didn’t mind too much?”*
*”No worries man, you sounded great. Now, I’ll be finishing that beer if you don’t mind.”*
With a content smile on his face, Kokaku took place at the bar again where he started to finish his beer. This might as well be the last night he would be in this place… there was hardly anything left for him here, right?
OOC: As always in my posts, *” <text> “* indicated the dialogue is in Japanese. Furthermore, the song is my translation of the song ‘Een manier om thuis te komen’ by Blof.
