“So, is he going to sit there all day?”
Sally’s whispers could have been heard as far as the third table from her but Victoria stifled her laugh as she shrugged a response. Sally wasn’t trying to be mean but she couldn’t help but goggle at the tall muscular man sitting at the far wall. Victoria knew Tak had nothing better to do but to wait until she finished her shift.
Bob didn’t seem to mind but poor Sally couldn’t help but nosey into it and question Victoria about every five minutes. She would move over there offer another cup of coffee which he declined with a shake of the head. Sally wondered if Tak ever talked. She was about to ask Victoria but was rushed off to another table.
Victoria made her way over to his table. Her last fair walking out of the door. She had about an hour left until another girl came on shift to take her place. Business was good on the weekends but Tuesdays on other hand seemed to go slow in the afternoon.
“So are you going to say something nice towards Sally. She thinks your mute.”
Victoria smirked as she watched Tak’s eyebrows move in a questionable manner. Victoria looked at his cup, it was still half full and his hands were wrapped around it. As he spoke, she looked up at his face and then past him through the glass window.
“You still have what? Another hour or so? What do you want to do after this?”
Victoria turned her eyes back on him and tilted her head taking in a breath and letting it out quickly.
“Well probably take a shower and then we can go walk the beach. It’s a lot warmer so we won’t have to worry about jackets or anything. That is, if you don’t mind going.”
Tak shook his head.
“I’ll go where you want me to go Victoria.”
Tak always seemed obedient as if he were on call for her. If he would do anything for her. She guessed it was his way to show his affection without being rejected. Victoria could never get him to make a decision half the time when it came to ‘hanging out’. He always left the choices up to her leaving her sometimes frustrated that she had to make all the decisions. She also seemed to come up with the opinion that he just wanted her to be happy. No sense in picking something she didn’t like, so in the end he believed it was easier that way.
“Okay then.”
She rose from her seat greeted a new couple at the door and lead them to their table. Victoria would take glances over towards Taks table. He seemed more or so like a statue. Unmoving, not talking. Victoria still wondered if he thought about what happened the other night. Her lip was no more as puffy as it was to start with and her bruise was hidden quite well under some thick foundation. Surely he couldn’t be thinking about that. After all she did tell him not to worry about it.
Getting the orders, the drinks and then bringing some bread to the table. Victoria went in the kitchen. Sally was busy bustling past her with plates of food only giving her a big smile before moving back out into the restaurant area. Bob on the other hand sat on a chair with a paper in his hands.
“Hey Bob I need two orders of cheese burgers, one without onions one with, a side of fries and a mac and cheese. Simple order.”
Victoria smiled at him as he folded his paper carefully putting it back in the seat of the chair as he gave her a wink and slapped two fresh meat patties on the grill.
“So tell me Victoria. Who’s the guy? I’ve noticed him sitting about all day. You sure you know him. Don’t need me to usher him out do you?”
Victoria shook her head as she began to speak. She leaned up against the counter her hand resting in her pocket as her fingers fiddled with the pen and paper in it.
“No he’s an old friend from New York. He came into town to keep me company. Kinda like a big brother. He doesn’t have anything else to do nor does he know anyone in town so he’s kinda sticking with me for a while. I hope you don’t mind, I can have him wait downstairs if you want?”
“No, no don’t worry your pretty little head. He’s doing just fine where he is. I just wanted to make sure he was with you and not causing you any troubles.”
She smiled at the big man in front of her. She was aware of his protective tone. The way he kept eyeballing the area Tak sat at.
“Thank you Bob. His name is Theodore but everyone calls him Tak. He’s a good person when you get to know him. But he’s always been a bit shy around new people.”
Bob flipped the burgers onto the other sides and started to fix the plates. Victoria watched as he worked and wondered if it was ok to tell him something about her past.
“Hey Bob?”
He looked up at her with a smile.
“I just wanted to Thank both you and Sally for helping me out when I first came her. Not a lot of people would have done that and I know how much of a strain it is to keep me around. Don’t think I can’t do math. I mean. I’ve always had it rough growing up. Not having a stable life and well. Now that I think of it. This is probably the most stable I’ve been in a long time. So thank you. And as soon as I get enough money saved up. I’ll get out of your hair.”
Bob shook his head as he kept his eyes on the food.
“Now don’t you worry about me and Sally. We’ll get along just fine. To tell you the truth I think Sally would be heart broken if you did leave. Now I kept telling her it wasn’t going to last forever but she had taken a liking towards you. I guess she just likes gabbing to you better than me. Im not much of a listener when it comes to those girlie magazines of hers.”
“So do you guys have kids? I know its non of my business but Sally, actually you both seem to be good parents. You’ve been taking good care of me that’s for sure.”
“We have one. Spoiled thing, that was Sally’s doing. He’s in college back in Texas now. Working part time on my folks farm and going for some architecture degree. We’re so proud of him. Though Sally still misses the fact that we didn’t have more children. Her momma was one for big families. Sally loved the idea but it was hard times with the restaurant back then and another mouth to feed was a little hard. Course we could have went back home. But we just loved the restaurant too much to just let it go.”
Victoria nodded. She didn’t really know how families work but she knew that Sally and Bob both made sacrifices.
“So he comes around on what, holidays?”
He nodded.
“That he does. Course he’s got himself a new girlfriend and has been spending a lot of holidays with her. But he promised this summer he was going to come in. His momma can’t do nothing but whine when he has to leave but its good that he spends time with his old parents.”
He laughed a belly laugh, it echoing in the kitchen. Victoria couldn’t help but wonder what it was like to grow up with Sally. Sally was a little paranoid. Victoria could even guess that she fussed over everything. But who wouldn’t. Every mother wanted to protect their child. The thought of Sally running after a small boy who flung himself into mud gave Victoria the giggles.
It wasn’t long before two plates were put into her hands and she was ushered out of the kitchen. By then Bob had told her a few stories of when they would go camping or something that was family oriented. It was nice hearing about them. Bob told them so vividly as if Victoria could picture them right in her head.
But in the back of her mind she wished she had the same privileges as most children. She doesn’t even think shes ever been camping. Maybe Tak would take her?
“Here you two go? Do you need anything else?”
With the happy couple munching on their lunch, Victoria looked over at Tak who was more or less now turned to look out at the city streets. He seemed to notice her looking at him and when he looked at her she made a face at him which caused him to smirk. He really needs to lighten up, she thought to himself. It was a beautiful day and her shift was almost over. Maybe they could walk on the boardwalk and force him to eat ice cream with her.
Making a mental to do list Victoria counted down until she was done with work.
