I need you all to tell me your serious thoughts about Rock and Roll. For over fifty years Rock and Roll has been the most popular brand of music in the western world and beyond. It has gone through many changes with many genre's. So I must ask you- How do you define Rock and Roll?
Discuss.

As a genre of music. That's all there is to it unless you get philosophical or something.

hmm... Rock and Roll, i think is defined by a person's taste. For example, Rock and Roll to me is the classic 80's stuff like Aerosmith, Motley Crue, Guns'N'Roses, Eagles, etc. But to the newer generations Rock and Roll could mean something particularly different.
I prefer industrial, goth, trance, and electronica more than Rock or Metal. (at least for now...)

Nice question man... I feel like I'm trying to explain Quantum Physics...
So here-goes:
Rock is that beat that makes you smile, makes you start tapping your feet, nodding your head, and when that high note hits, you start banging your head as if you were a voodoo doll!
Rock is that feeling you have when a musician plays their guitar like it was a singer, dominating the audience. In Rock, the Guitar is not a background, it's the star. Rock is not just singing, it's the instruments as well. Rock, in that sense, is so different because it places a personifying sense on its instruments, and most importantly, the beats that result.
Rap has its rhymes, Country has it's folk, and Classical has its melody; Rock has its Beats, and its rhythm. That's what makes Rock and Rock.... Rock n' Roll!

Rock is something different. Period. Its in all of us- EVERYONE has a definition, good or bad, of rock. and should you hear it, all of it holds a LITTLE bit of truth. Rock? Is a portion of the soul.

Agreeing with Leon on this one. Somehow I just think what he said makes perfect sense.

Anything before Nirvana.....then it all just became bitching. Done. You just said what rock and roll bands are. Not what Rock and Roll IS

No I said what it is. Since the band Nirvana made moaning cool, Rock and Roll has simply become a more popular form of bitching.
Your question is just depressing, what we should be focusing on was what Rock n' Roll WAS.
