Ever since Kazuki mentioned it, it was stuck in my head for a while. "What would actually happen if Zerreth and Li were to seriously fight?"
Since it'd be completely closed, I've decided to put the fruits of my mental imaging here.
(No specified narrative here. It's all third-person)
"Well, Zerreth. I think you know what I'm going to tell you."
"Say it anyway."
"All the test results say it. After putting so much strain on yourself, you've not only officially become blind, but I don't think any light is even registering in your left eye."
He knew for some time. Ever since he received that scar, he was quite aware that it was inevitable. He even noticed how the things he saw on his left didn't match up with the auras he felt around him. Moreover, his peripheral vision, if any, towards his left was getting dimmer and dimmer. He didn't think hearing such a thing would hurt so much, and yet it still hit him as if this was a surprise to him. He couldn't see Li who was to his left, but Zerreth could feel his frown directed at him.
"In all honesty, there's nothing I can do."
"I know, thanks."
As the glass double doors to the hospital slid open, Zerreth began to fumble around in his pockets looking for his keys. At least, I lost it after Kvist fell. I only wish I didn't try to stare through the dust... As he continued to walk, he noticed that the footsteps behind him stopped. As he felt a prick on the back of his neck, he quickly dodged to the right just in time to feel the air from a kick barely missing him. He turned to face his younger brother.
"Li, what do you think you're doing?"
The frown on Li's face displayed more than disappointment. They expressed his anger.
"I'm tired of it Zerr. I'm sick of following you around just to end up doing nothing."
"What are you talking about? Look what happened to Varron."
"Nothing did. We never caused it, we weren't a catalyst. We were just there in the background."
"Anything wrong with that?"
"Of course there is! What happened to what you did at #1542? When did you take such a passive role? I hate how you're willing to play backup and let people walk all over you."
Zerreth folded his arms.
"Now that's not true. I've never let anyone walk all over me."
"So you're fine being the lapdog then?" No reaction.
"Are you getting anywhere with this?"
"Yeah. I'm done following you. I want to carve the path that we take. I'm sick of you just sitting back and doing nothing. I'm gonna take control of our actions."
Li realized that he needed to have an edge against Zerreth. Since they sparred together so frequently, they both knew each other's moves quite well. The only way to win was to keep Zerreth off-guard. His back was straight as he placed his left foot forward and his right back. Then then held out his bent arms at about chest level. This was a modified version of his Kendo stance. Li had been training constantly to try and overtake Zerreth. He was so determined that he had ended up developing a new fighting style just to take on his older brother. It was Kendo mixed with a bit of Jeet Kune Do to have that precise striking form and yet, still be very free-flowing.
"Oh?"
Zerreth looked on with his arms still crossed. It seemed that Li was being serious about this, but Zerreth could already feel the hesitation. Still though, he realized that Li must've been anticipating for a chance to voice his opinion for a while. While this new stance did surprise him, it wasn't enough to knock his focus. While he kept a calm exterior, his insides said otherwise. Improvisation wasn't a problem for Zerreth, but this was a big jump he had to take. He already knew that his sense of depth was a bit askew due to the lack of sight through one eye. He wasn't sure how to approach this situation. He stuck his left thumb into his pocket and exposed his right side to Li. He held his hand out and motioned for Li to come at him.
Li lowered his body and broke into a sprint and tucked his hands in as if he was carrying a sword and going for the thrust. He then quickly straightened himself and went for a punch to Zerreth's chest with his right while keeping his left hand close to his face for protection. It was only until he fully extended his arm that he realized he was hitting air. Zerreth had already avoided his punch by simply moving clockwise along the direction of his arm. Li planted his right front foot more firmly into the ground and then spun to try and backhand Zerreth.
"Too slow"
While his back was to Li's, Zerreth had tilted his body a bit to be able to see at least Li's arm through his right eye. He knew fully that this was an attempt to get him off guard, but Zerreth had already raised his left arm for a vertical elbow strike and swung down to intercept Li's entire arm before he could backhand. As Zerreth felt contact he spun counter-clockwise to take Li's hand and twist it around his back. Once doing so, he then placed his left leg behind Li's right and kicked it forward knocking him off balance.
Li recovered quickly to spin around and jump backwards. Readying his stance one more time he realized he was staring into Zerreth's eyes, which were already in his "Death Glare." Even with a clouded left eye, Zerreth could still pierce Li with his killing intent.
"If you're going to be serious, then prove it. Show me that you're not the dog that you claim me to be." Along with his gaze, Zerreth spoke in a cold tone that told Li that Zerreth was serious this time. He could feel a chill run through his body and Li couldn't help but shiver slightly.Still with an angered look on his face, and clenched teeth from frustration, Li charged at Zerreth. He was determined to take out his brother...
