Eve of Destruction
It was the eve of destruction and somehow I knew it was coming
The streetlamps were brighter than ever and the night was crisp
A cold wave washed over me during this witching hour
Beckoning me to join the vesper festival
I recoil from the invitation and sought the comfort of my warmth
But such comfort began to flow away from me as I drifted into the abyss
I was unsure, but I was being guided
I was alone, but I was accompanied by my solitude
I was wishing for answers, but found none during my journey down the tunnel
A soft tumult embraced me on the way and I turned toward its direction in hopes of insight
I found none but the same loneliness by my side
At least my companion is loyal
The world has been leaving me behind as of late during its race to the dawn
I think I’m beginning to like it here in the night in spite of my insecurities before
But I can’t stay here forever when twilight is waiting for me
The tunnel collapsed without a sound, but its shape and path remained
There were no longer walls to guide me
I have never felt so lost in such a constricting space of darkness
But I can’t stay here forever when twilight is waiting for me
Wisps of ether surround me as I seat myself and curl up
The same way I did before I joined this carnival of the night
My loneliness is still beside me, although it’s not quite the same
So I looked up and wondered
And I found a blue jay and a hawk above, perched on their respective branches
The hawk stood in all its adamancy, inquiring the coy jay that shied off to the side
What was wrong? The jay replied that she was too old when she was clearly young
The jay looked away, avoiding the raptor’s curious gaze as he arrived upon a conclusion
So the jay didn’t feel comfortable because she was still in the nest?
The hawk opened his wings to display his majesty, reassuring her that it took time to get where he was
But the blue jay chirped back that most attempt to fly without any prior knowledge
The hawk had to agree
Suddenly, the hawk boldly made his statement to aid his friend
The trick was to jump up and down and flap your wings until you can leap from branch to branch
It makes you look good, it makes you look good always when you try hard
Higher and higher you go, you will begin to understand how it feels to have the wind through your wings and what it’s like to soar
It was called experience and it shouldn’t be rushed, it was progress
Eventually you will reach the top of the tree and all you have to do is open up your wings and fly
I blinked in realization of my predicament and searched for my loyal companion
Nowhere in sight
Zephyrs lifted me from the earth until I felt the brush of a welcoming gale
Where it would take me, I didn’t know
But the twilight was waiting, so I turned to go
Into the chasm of the unknown
An everglow reminded me that this was the eve of destruction
I had to create
It was the eve of destruction and somehow I knew it was coming
