Funny what a few weeks alone in the desert can do to a man. It can destroy him completely… But it can also give him the tools to rebuild upon what is left, and become something far better than he had been before. This is exactly what Maverik had done. Into the Nevada desert he had vanished, and so too from it did he return late this night. He had not let anyone know of either trip, save for Rose, to whom he had trusted to keep a constant vigil in his absence. His skin was dirty, his hair matted, a somewhat rugged beginnings of a beard strewn harshly across his face that made him look even older than he had become. It was a stark contrast to his usually clean look that he had been keeping ever since he received his job as Dean.
His bike now parked safely next to his car, he headed up the stairwell towards his apartment where he knew that Xian would be slumbering peacefully. Each step was slow and careful, even there, so far from his room, he moved with a silence that was fit of a man determined not to awaken the woman whom he had taken into his life. His mind was clear, no longer filled with the cluttered thoughts of days past. He found himself free of all that had bogged him down. His baggage left behind in the wasteland of Nevada. Only in doing this, he knew, did he have a chance of regaining all that he had lost. Only now did he stand a chance of attaining his ultimate goal of the removal of Kvist and his hand.
Quietly he slipped into his apartment, closing the door and locking it behind him. The place was just as he had left it. Though perhaps cleaner. He knew that this was a sign that Xian had been worried about things, especially since she had few other outlets, having their child so close to birth. He carefully paced across the floor, leaving little more than a slight imprint from his weight in the carpet. He removed his shoes and placed them by the door, then creaking it open and letting himself in to the bedroom they had shared almost ever since they had moved in together. There lay Xian, silent in the dark room, her silk pajama’s laying lightly over her. She lay on top of the covers, as the warmth of summer did not call for them. Maverik smiled softly as he noticed that she lay upon her side, leaving his side of the bed empty. Had she been waiting for his return all this time? Slowly he climbed onto the bed, careful not to move the mattress too much… He wrapped one arm around her and gently kissed the nape of her neck. “I’m home…” He whispered gently, uncaring of whether she was awake to hear it. All that mattered was that he was back.
