There were so many to choose from. Short ones, tall ones, round ones, skinny ones, Long hair, short hair, or no hair at all. The choices were endless when it came to finding her perfect companion. Something Victoria had thought about for a long time or rather only a few days of really hard thought. It was time she moved on and this was the perfect opportunity.
“You are so cute.”
A pink tongue curled and licked her nose as Victoria’s eyes meet with the cute long haired pup in her hands. His soft fur that she just wanted to bury her face into. She always wanted a dog but she didn’t know with her job if she could handle house breaking him. Specially since she had just gotten her carpets scrubbed clean when she moved in.
“Maybe another time you fluff ball.”
She spoke in baby talk as she handed over the puppy to the store owner.
“What would you recommend for a new pet owner with no experience, that wont need much maintenance?”
The pet keeper placed the puppy back into its pen and seemed hardly to think of a response.
“I would say to start out with fish. They only need to be fed every other day. Water changes monthly depending on the filter or tank. There are a few species that are easy to care for.”
Victoria followed as the pet keeper over to the many freshwater tanks. He pointed to a few small fish.
“You have your basic gold fish and then you have the Tetra family. Each in itself low maintenance.”
Victoria looked at all the fish but seemed to be drawn to a lone blue fish with long fins in a very small bowl. It seemed trapped with no where to go. It must not like that small little bowl Victoria thought to herself.
The pet keeper followed her eyes and then proceeded to tell her what he was.
“That one happens to be a Japanese fighting fish which is commonly known as the Beta. You can only have one male and we recommend you not keeping a female within the same tank for if they do breed it is a possibility the male will become aggressive and attack the female.”
Victoria was impressed by the guys knowledge of fish and didn’t bother to look any further. She liked the poor looking blue fish. To her it seemed as if she was that poor little beta trapped in that small bowl, seemingly neglected because of its behavior.
Without hesitation she told the guy that she wanted the little blue beta. Watching as he put it within a bag, tying it off before handing it over. He also in returned handed her a pamphlet of how to take care of the little fish.
Taking her new pet and the pamphlet she made her way around to look at different tanks and supplies. She looked at the checklist and seemed to grab what was needed. There were so many different decorations that a person could put in a tank. She even seen a little motorcycle which she grabbed with a small smile. Her beta would be going in style.
Feeling that she had gotten all that she needed she raised the bag eye level and looked at the fish who seemed to look more perkier than he did within that small bowl. She seemed perkier too. Smiling at the small fish she rang out and headed out the door.
------Back at the apartment-----
Victoria sluggishly made her way into her apartment. Giving one last look towards the many stairs she just climbed before closing the door. Raising her one arm she smiled at the plastic bag that held her fish.
“Welcome home err, umm.”
She never thought about a name. What could she call a fish? She would think the names would be endless. That she could name it anything in the world. So deciding to think it over she got started with setting up the tank.
------Half An Hour Later-----
Victoria looked questionably at the pamphlet she had gotten from within the filter box. She knew it was plain english but she just wasn’t getting what it was trying to tell her. Flipping through the pages she seemed to get frustrated because some smart guy up in where ever the thing was printed at decided to not include pictures. How was she supposed to know the technical names of all the little parts of the filter.
Throwing the pamphlet that was of no use aside she decided to wing it, like she always did. Fitting each piece together and in hopes looked like the picture in front of the box. Grinning at the wretched thing she felt confident that she got it right.
“There see, that wasn’t so hard. I should have did that instead of reading that damned book.”
Sticking the filter on the lip of the tank, she plugged it in. Waiting for it to start circulating the water it instead provided her with a loud grounding noise. Hurrying she unplugged it before it had a chance to break.
“Come on now...”
Reaching for the pamphlet again she flipped through the pages.
“Hmm”
Reading towards the end of the instructions she immediately shook her head. Here she had to place water within the filter before plugging it in. That would resolve that horrid noise. So doing as she was told she filled it up before plugging it back in.
“Waa la”
She said towards the fish that rested still within the confines of the plastic bag. She lifted him up and showed him his new home.
“Its not much but it’s a lot better than that small bowl you were trapped in.”
The 5 gallon tank looked all spiffy with the motorcycle decor in the middle of the tank floor. Victoria seemed proud of herself that she had made the tank look quite nice on her own. She hadn’t really did much besides adding a few plastic plants and some rocks in there but to a fish it was probably paradise.
“So, lets see, I'm supposed to set you, little dude in the tank so the waters get adjusted before letting you roam free. So sorry little dude your stuck in the bag for a little while longer.”
Placing the plastic bag in the water she watched it as it floated at the top.
“Well I don’t know any cool names but since your blue, and I have a friend called Blue, I’ll just call you Blue too.”
Sure she wasn’t creative enough to give the poor fish any sort of name. She had never named a pet before. This was completely new to her.
“So, while you get used to it, Im going to make myself some dinner.”
Leaving the tank to go to the kitchen she looked around. Her cupboards were still bare and her fridge, or rather lack of one was no where in sight. Turning her head towards the counter she spotted a box of cheese nips.
“Well I guess dinner is served.”
She said in dismay at the box before going back into the living room area to greet her little fish again.
“Its just you and me Blue. We can tackle this place all by ourselves.”
Taking a cheese flavored cracker out of the box she nibbled on it. She had to wait an hour. An hour seemed like a long time. But with nothing but her and the fish, it seemed as if she had all the time in the world.
