“The rents due on the 15th of every month, you miss even one month and your booted out of here, you got me sweet cheeks?”
Victoria looked at the gruff looking guy who was supposed to be her new landlord. She had only met him today which sad to say the least was not anything she had enjoyed. The man seemed to eyeball her as if she would ever give him any time or day. The thought in the back of her mind made her want to throw up. Disgusting.
She had made the arrangements over the phone with a pleasant sounding lady. It was one of the reasons that she decided to go with the apartment, not to mention the view and how close it was to the school. This guy on the other hand lacked charm and bath soap leaving her unsure about her stay here.
“I will have it for you on time as preset by my lease agreement.”
The guy snorted.
“This is a six month lease. First months and security deposit is needed now. I won’t be handing you the keys until I have it.”
“That’s quite alright. Let me see the paperwork and decide then.”
Being handed the lease agreement Victoria scanned over the wording carefully. The basic stuff seemed to ring out. No money, No Roof. All the legal stuff was there. She was familiar with the routine. Removing her own pen from her pocket she signed the paper and dated where it needed to be signed. While handing it back only for the beast in front of her holding out his greasy fat hand.
Victoria took the hint and handed over the money. The guy didn’t waste time in throwing her the keys and walking out. He got what he wanted and she got a new apartment.
Turning around to face the rather small, bare apartment she didn’t know where to start first. The previous owner decided graffiti was fitting for a wall paint and would take a few layers to cover. It wasn’t surprising the apartment looked as if someone had thrown dirt all over the place. Renters didn’t care about the homes they were only staying at for a short period of time. They would destroy and leave the mess for the owners. It was a shame that people thought of it that way.
Victoria saw the possibilities as she looked around. The four roomed apartment was more than enough room she had been used to. In fact it seemed like a mansion compared to where she had stayed in the past. So taking a deep breath she gave it one last look around and walked out the door locking the door with her own keys on the way out.
Home sweet home.
-------------------------------Couple Hours Later-----------------------------------
Collapsing into a pile of bags Victoria was not used to carrying so much up so many stairs. It was bad enough she had three gallon buckets of paint and four plastic bags of things hanging from her hands. Her fingers where numb and red from the shear weight of it all. It only took her three tries to get into the apartment, all the while holding all the stuff.
“Man that was rough..”
She said to herself as she again came face to face with the bare apartment.
“Okay, now the question is where to begin...”
She removed some of the things from the bags, taking out paint rollers, brushes and painters tape. It was only natural she would try to get rid of the ugly walls first. Starting with the living room. The graffiti was nerving as she had specially gotten some Kilts to cover it completely so it didn’t bleed through.
-----------------------------------Little While Later-----------------------------------
Mixing and stirring the paint she had everything prepared as she poured it into the painting container without dripping on the plastic drop cloth she had covering the dirty carpets with. Filling it up to where she believed it needed to be she got started.
The brushing of corners and around window sills seemed to take her forever. The light tan covering the greyish white walls helped in giving some leeway to let her know that she was making progress. Finishing the detailing with the brush she heard a bang on her door.
Walking over to the door she looked out the peephole thinking she was going to see the landlord but instead found it to be a familiar face. Opening the door she smiled widely at the two people she didn’t expect to show up.
“Hey what are you two doing here. I haven’t even gotten furniture in yet.”
Victoria laughed as Bob and Sally came walking into the empty apartment. Sally of course held food in her hands handing it over as she waltzed in. Victoria looked down and without notice her belly had let out a loud growl in response. Perfect timing.
“So doll where would you like us to begin?”
Victoria turned and looked around.
“Begin? You don’t need to help, I got it, We will eat and Ill finish later on."
It seemed as if the two didn't want to take no for an answer. After the feasting was done they both got their hands dirty. Victoria had never seen so much paint go onto the walls in such a short notice. Course there was the fact that she wasn't alone and had someone to chat with made time go a little quicker.
And in the end as the three stood watching the wet paint. Victoria put her arms around both of them.
"Thank you for helping me. It probably would have taken me days to get this place covered in paint."
"No problem little girl its only the least we can do since you have helped us with the restaurant so much."
Bob said with a smile before stretching his arms up high with a yawn. Then when he spoke it was gruff and tired sounding.
"I don't know about you but I'm getting too old for this stuff. Since you don't have any furniture yet you can still hit the sheets at our place."
Victoria thought about it but she had to decline.
"No, Ill be alright here. Thank you anyway. But I will be back for my stuff bright and early tomorrow morning."
She hugged them both as they made their exit. She had the weekend to put her place together. To get the necessaries and her things, which weren't much.
After locking the door, she went into each room inspecting the place before turning off all the lights, move into the room that would be her bedroom and found the one bag she had brought in before she had painted. It was her clothing. Sure they were a little old and worn but in the end they were good for doing the repairs around the apartment. Balling up the pair of jeans she put it under her head as she laid on the floor. With no pjs or no real bedding, she felt like she was back on the street. Except this time there was no cold breeze or people walking past. This time it was within her own apartment. Her own independence shining through as she had a grin on her face watching the shadows dance along her walls.
Things could only get better.
Kicking off her shoes, it was only a matter of time before her eyes closed and she fell asleep right on the floor of her new apartment.
