A wind whistles softly through the trees as the rustle of leaves accompany the starting concerto. The higher reaches of the mountains are covered in snow from the recent wave of rainfall. The lower reaches and the foot of the mountains are not as frozen, but exhibit enough dampness to prove winter’s presence. While some animals seek warmer climates, others feel at home and naturally adapt to the changing temperatures in spite of the warnings about global warming. Usually, January is when it’s “cold”. The end of December is just the tip of the iceberg. A cougar prowls a ledge, completely concealed by the thinning tree line, looks down a long ways away at a Vietnamese brunette sitting contentedly among the deeper woods near the foot of the mountain. Its ears perk up at the sound of something approaching the human… Curiosity holds the cougar’s attention long enough for the creature to be identified before boredom drives it away.
Valencia chose a nice spot to meditate, for lack of better words. While performing jobs and working out in the weight room strengthened her muscles, sitting out in the middle of nowhere strengthened her senses. Stimulus was everywhere around her, but it wasn’t the kind that irritated her. Her gray eyes were closed and her mind was at work in dissecting the different noises from the creaking boughs of trees to the faint rustling of leaves. She couldn’t reach the same level of awareness attained when her ex boyfriend threatened her life, but it was worth a shot to shoot for that level.
She was looking for a specific kind of noise… Something alive that separated itself from everything else. Valencia was listening for her dog. She trains with her dog out in the mountains all the time, so it knows the drill: try to sneak up on Valencia. The Asian kept meditating and working away at all the sensory details as a snowy white German Shepherd Husky Mix stared at its owner from the underbrush. From another point of view, anyone could mistake the mutt for a big bad wolf ready to pounce the “unsuspecting blind woman sitting all alone in a mountainous forest”. I mean, it wasn’t as though Valencia made her dog wear a collar that’d easily give away its location…
